Stack of CD's Cake

Ok, you know when you have a cake idea in your head, but it doesn't quite come out in cake form??? Yep, that's what happened here. Not quite what I had pictured in my head but it's ok. It is supposed to be a stack of music cd's side to side so you can see the titles then headphones over the top. I baked a square cake and cut it into four equal squares. Then I stacked those on top of each other to make the cube. I frosted the whole cube white and sprinkled the left side pink to represent the back of the first cd. The opposite side is sprinkled in purple to represent the front of that cd. The top of the cube (aka the top of all the cd's) I sprinkled in gold. The seperating lines I just made with a knife in the frosting. I added candy and writing to represent the title side of the cds. I used Hostess snowballs for the headphones (ear part) and piped chocolate for the cord. The top of the headphones troubled me the most. First I tried taffy, but it just sagged/broke and I tried more than once :( so next I tried to pipe chocolate like I did for the princess tiara cake. It broke because I didn't have the right curve on it. SO, I broke my own rule and added a non-edible part to my cake--a handle off of an ice cream bucket! It worked. I think she likes it! Purple Flower Cake

A beautiful purple flower cake for a beautiful young woman! I layered 3 cakes and frosted in dark purple frosting. Then I covered it all in purple sprinkles. Then, to make the flowers, I used fruit slices candy. I cut them into thirds for the large petals and into fourths for the smaller petals. I used half for a leaf. I rolled those pieces flat on granulated sugar with my rolling pin. Then I pinched one side together to make a petal or leaf. I wanted it to look not so perfect, just pretty. I used mini chewy sweetarts candy for the middles. I am really happy with how it turned out!

Football Oreo Truffles

The perfect tailgate treat! EASY, too! Crush up a package of Oreo's then mix in a package of cream cheese. Form into footballs then dip into melted chocolate. I used chocolate bark which I found by the cocoa in the baking isle. I dipped the balls by sticking a plastic fork in one side and swirling it in the chocolate. As you can see, some didn't get wiped off very good so I had some 'run off' but, no worries, they tasted great! When hard, pipe on white icing for the strings. They were a huge hit at the party and taste great!

Graduation Cap Cupcakes

So easy, but they turned out very fun. I made mini cupcakes. Frosted with pink and white (her color choice, obviously you could use school colors). Then I used sour DOTS for the cap and Starbursts cut in half lengthwise for the top and pull and peel licorice cut at the end and attached with a dot of frosting...DONE! I did almost a hundred to fill the cupcake tree and they were a big hit at the party.

Baseball Cake

Okay, I went the easy route! Just a round cake frosted in white with red licorice. I was going to go all out and make a 3D circle cake, but if you saw this 6-year old's face when he saw this cake you would have just gone easy, too! He LOVED it!

Harry Potter Cake

For my 10 year old's birthday we had a Harry Potter theme. I was planning to make a cake to look like the golden snitch but when we watched the first movie again for inspiration my son decided it would be more fun to make a cake like Hagrid gave to Harry Potter when they first met! So, that is what we did. I think he was pleased. Just a circle cake frosted in pink and writing is with green gel (spelled just like Hagrid did!).

Dad's Tool Cake

My 5-year old wanted to decide how we did Dad's cake this year! So, he drew out his design and told me what shape the cake should be. I made the cake and we used fruit roll-ups for the saw and wrench and fruit by the foot for the tape measure. He used cookie cutters for the letters (also out of fruit roll-ups). He was so proud of HIS cake!

BYU Football Helmet

Another BYU challenge from my son: BYU themed, no repeat from another year! So, I attempted a football helmet this year. It was much harder than I thought (allow some extra time in your day!) but he seemed very pleased with it. My husband liked it so much he had a hard time wanting to cut it up to serve it!

I used two small circle pans for the bottom of the helmet and a bowl for the top layer. I stacked them up and cut out the front. The pieces were then used to fill in the gaps from the second layer to the bowl layer to round it out more. I had the hardest time finding a dark navy blue coloring for my contrasting colors. I did buy a navy food coloring gel, but it never turns dark so I add a little black and I think I have it for the chocolate I used for the face guard. So, I tried that same mixture in the frosting and it didn't work. So, I ended up using the chocolate that I had colored for all the blue that you see. I piped the face guard similar to how I did this except I just freehanded it instead of using a pattern. Then, I piped right on the cake for the logo and stripes.

Holiday Pretzel Treats

Not cake, but one of the best holiday treats you can make (and eat!). So easy, too. All you do is lay pretzels on a baking sheet. Any shape you like, but big enough to hold a chocolate kiss. Next, unwrap the kisses and set them on the pretzels. Put these in the oven (350 degrees) for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes until chocolate is soft but not melted. Remove from oven and press an M&M on top! Let cool and ENJOY!!!

Butterfly Cake

Butterflies, butterflies and more butterflies! I wanted to do butterflies all over this cake and make it very pretty for my teenage girl. It didnt' turn out too formal but she loved it--that's all that matters to me! And, her brothers enjoyed the candy, so it was great!

I used white chocolate covered pretzels for the wings and sour gummy worms for the body, slicing part way down and spreading apart to make the antennas. I frosted the whole layered cake white and added sprinkles for more color.

If I were to do it again (and have more time) I would add flowers and/or leaves and do a light pink frosting so the butterflies would show up better.

Chicken Little Cupcakes

Chicken Little is a cute story about a chicken who thinks the sky is falling because an acorn fell from a tree and hit his head. So, I made chicken cupcakes and acorn treats.

For the acorns, use a donut hole and dip one end in melted chocolate. You could actually use anything you like such as frosting, carmel topping or peanut butter because you are then going to dip that into toffee bits. And, again, you could even use finely chopped nuts. Then, add a small piece of pretzel for the stem. Cute, huh?! These were a big hit at the party!

For the chickens, I used my own cake recipe to make mini cupcakes. I didn't use wrappers because you will be frosting the entire cupcake. For the 'feet' I cut orange jelly candies in half. Honestly, they didn't work very well and if I make these again I would just use orange tic-tacs. I frosted the whole thing with white frosting and rolled it in yellow tinted coconut. Then, piped chocolate frosting eyes and added a peanut for the beak and cinnamon candies for the top.

Okay, I may be the last to discover this, but I realized that if I use my cookie scoop to fill the muffin pans that 1 scoop fills a mini muffin perfectly and 2 scoops fills a regular muffin perfectly!! Who knew? All this time, I tried spoons, measuring cups, etc. just to make a huge mess. Hope this helps someone like me that has never realized this before!

Wood Cake

For my son's birthday we took them to the local Home Depot for the kid's workshop! So, to celebrate the wood building theme I made the cake to look like two pieces of wood. I even made chocolate/yellow swirl cake for an added touch! I mixed light brown and dark brown fosting slightly to get an uneven look and then scraped each with a texture tool I have. Then I added dark frosting to make "knots" and a couple of swipes to add more grain look. He was happy with it!

I found these on Bakerella and knew I wanted to try them sometime! What a fun idea! I need a lot more practice to get them as beautiful as hers, but it was so fun!! CTR Cake

This cake was made for my son who got baptized this weekend. CTR stands for choose the right and is used frequently in our church. So, when I asked him what kind of cake he wanted, this is what he asked for. Pretty simple, I just baked a circle cake and cut it out into a shield shape, frosted with green and green sugar sprinkles, then piped the letters on.

CARS Cake

My son LOVES the Disney CARS movie so for his birthday he wanted a race track with "Kachow" (aka Lightening McQueen) winning! So, I made a round chocolate cake. I crushed up chocolate center sandwich cookies to look like gravel and lined the track with halved cookies. I made grass with green colored coconut and added white frosting lines for the track. I then added his cars to the track and the 'trophy' candle that he wanted on top. It was easy and he was pleased!!

Music Note

This cake started with a bunny! I baked a chocolate cake and turned it out onto a platter. After tilting in to the right and trimming it where needed, I frosted it with dark chocolate frosting and clear sprinkles.

The final product...a 16th Note for a 16 year old's birthday cake!!

Hot Wheels Cake

My attempt at a Hot Wheels Cake. I was trying to make it look like a Hot Wheels track that the car was coming down from. It also is supposed to double as a number nine because it is his ninth birthday! The car even has a nine. He said he gets it and I think he is more excited about the car than the cake...so?? Maybe next time.

I used a round cake and sour candy strips for the track. I think next time I would just do it flat on the cake instead of trying to do it 3-D.

Shamrock Cupcakes

These were made for St. Patrick's Day the same way I made the heart cupcakes except I used 3 marbles as shown in the picture below. Only fill up the cups 1/2 way because you will be condensing the space! Also bake them for a shorter amount of time and check them because they will cook faster than normal. After frosting (I used green frosting and green sprinkles) you can add a green licorice for the stem! Enjoy!

Heart Cupcakes

This is our yearly Valentine's Day tradition! We like to make these cakes in the shape of hearts and the kids get to decorate them! This year we even colored the white cake pink--just for fun!

Here is a brief explanation on how to do this WITHOUT a purchased heart pan!

First, make your favorite cupcake recipe. Fill paper cup liners 2/3 full with batter. Then, place a marble to the side of each cup, like this:

Then, bake as you normally would and remove the cupcakes from the pan--they baked in the shape of the heart. Sometimes, they don't turn out perfectly heart-like, but I make them look that way with the frosting! Have fun with it!

BYU Football Stadium Cake

OK, here was the challenge from my son: I want a BYU themed, layered cake but not a repeat of any other year! Well, after thinking about those repeats, I decided to go for the whole stadium since the jersey, football, and logo were already done! So, here is my attempt. Not my best cake, but he got the point. I baked a large cake and cut the center down to the board. I frosted the board with green colored frosting and coconut then striped with white icing. I put the cut pieces on top of the sides for added height. Frosted in grey for a steel look and M&M's for fans (notice the student side!). I used the candles for flags and he almost refused to blow them out because he said they were the lights and the game wasn't over yet :) ! Oh, and the plane is a gift from his brother that they thought should fly over at the start of the game!

Princess Tiara Cake

My very first attempt at a tiara! I am pleased with how it turned out! I used white melting chocolate and piped it using a zipper baggie with a hole in the corner. I printed a pattern off the internet (they are available in a number of sites) and taped it to a large vinegar jug. Really, any round item with straight sides will work, just make sure it is something you will be able to slide the tiara off of when you are done! Then, I taped wax paper on top of the pattern. Then I just started piping the melted chocolate following the pattern. I found that the chocolate needed to be on the stiffer side to pipe because when it was too runny it just made a mess! I piped it one time through, then I went over it a second time and while wet I added the sprinkles and 'beads'. The 'beads' are actually sixlets. I found them in the cake decorating isle in lots of different colors. I actually did the tiara 3 days previous to making the cake and it was still good today. I did have the backs on both sides break off once but was able to fix them by using melted chocolate as 'glue'! The cake is decorated with buttercream frosting and I added weaved effect with more sixlets! I am pleased with it. Hopefully my daughter will be!

Rocket Cake

Okay, so this wasn't actually a cake I made, but I added to it and thought I'd share my inspiration! You could very well make the rolled cake by either doing a jelly roll or an ice cream roll, but I bought mine. If I made it I would have maybe written his name down like a rocket or something. Anyway, it was already 'sprinkled' so I kept it. Then I added the sparkling candles and the end and made a paper cone for the top. Very easy but it was neat when the candles were lit!

Taco Cakes

This was another cake done by my cub scout boys! They made a big round cake and cut it in half. Those halves were sat on their end and frosted with the appropriate color. Then they sprinkled oreo cookie crumbs to resemble meat and added cut up red, white & green gum drops and rolled green gum drops (roll in sugar to prevent sticking) to resemble lettuce. They even added strings of orange frosting for 'cheese'. Then, the left over gum drops they cut up into 'salsa'. Very clever guys!

Radio Cake

I made this cake for my daughter's dance party (which explains the pink radio)! It is two layered cakes that were baked in loaf pans, then frosted and decorated as shown. The top circle was a fruit roll-up. The other candies include M&M's, Dots, Rolos, licorice, etc.

Microphone Cupcakes

To celebrate the American Idol Finale, we made these cupcakes in a cone. Actually , we didn't bake the cake in the cone because we needed it to go higher. So, what we did was fill the bottom of the cup with M&M's for weight and then put frosting around the top of the cone for 'glue'. We placed the unwrapped cupcake on the top and frosted all the way around. Then we rolled it in a bowl of chocolate sprinkles. There you go--a microphone you can eat!

Rock Cake

This cake was made for my 7-year old son who is into rocks right now. I baked a chocolate cake in a glass bowl....

Then decorated with grey frosting. It is actually white with black gel coloring swirled in, but you can't tell in this picture. I let the chocolate cake show through a little for the look of the rock! Then, I crushed peanut butter oreos to make the rock look like it is in dirt and added candy rocks for the added touch. He was pleased!

"Donut" Cake

This was my first try at a bundt cake and I thought it turned out pretty good. I used a regular yellow cake recipe and let it cool completely in the pan. To decorate, I warmed the frosting a little and spooned it over the top so it would drizzle down the sides. Then I added sprinkles to the top. When the kids came home from school they all thought it was a huge donut! So, I've named this one the donut cake!

Giraffe

This cake was for a general animal party! It is obviously a giraffe. I made a 10" x 10" x 2" square cake and cut according to these directions:

I used peanut M&Ms for the eyes and mouth and didn't have enough room for antlers so I didn't add those. I think it turned out okay without them. I used peach colored frosting covered with toasted coconut and more M&Ms to create the look of spots.

Brownie "Cake" (a.k.a. Black Forest Sundae)

This tip courtesy of my 6 year old boy! I couldn't find my decorating tips anywhere and was in a hurry to finish this cake when my son brings over a medicine dropper and says "here, Mom, use this!" It worked great! So, when you are in a pinch, think like a 6 year old!

The boys made this cake for a cub scout cake auction. It was actually a brownie that was frosted, sprinkled and decorated with white chocolate chips, hershey's kisses for one team, cookies and creme kisses for the other team, and the refs were hugs! They used purchased cake decorations for the goal posts.

Easter Cupcakes

This is part of our Easter tradition. My mom used to make the cupcakes with the green coconut 'grass' on top with the jelly bean 'eggs' on top. She even added chenille stems for handles but I never seem to remember that! A few years ago I found a cute idea for bunny cupcakes so we do them both now! To make the bunnies, just frost in white with white coconut. Add mini marshmallows for the nose, M&M's for the eyes and nose. Then, cut a large marshmallow in half and immediatley dip the cut part in colored sugar to form the ears! EASY and so cute for Spring!

This was for the art party, obviously! I just did a circle cake and cut it out in this shape. Then added different colors of frosting for the paint. I used chocolate licorice and fruit roll ups for the paint brushes. I like how it turned out.

This cake was fun! I made a 9"x13" cake and cut it like this: This was one of my favorite books as a kid and I really like the outcome! I didn't use coconut like it shows in the book, though. I used a grass tip and two different colors of frosting. I used a fruit roll up for the collar and a junior mint for the eye. It was a hit with my 2-yr-old!

This cake was done on a theme of stars and constellations. It's simple, but turned out pretty good. I frosted it in dark blue and added white sprinkles for stars and the black candles outline the Big Dipper.

BBQ Grill

I can't take any credit for this one! When Tyler was in cub scouts they had a father-son cake contest and they put this one together all on their own. The whole thing is edible. I wish I had a better picture of the top...they actually made grill lines with marshmallows underneath for hot coals! The hamburger patties are cookies and the hot dogs and cheese are molding candy. The fire is melted cinnamon candies broken into shards and the rest is frosted.

Microphone Cake

This cake was for my daughter who LOVES music! I simply made a circle cake and a square cake and cut the square into the handle. I frosted in brown instead of black because it tastes better! If anyone has a way to make black frosting taste good, let me know! I added sprinkles and kept the brown theme by adding chocolate licorice for the microphone stripe and cord.

Koala Cupcakes

Obviously for a 15th birthday celebration, my daughter is way into koalas. So, I came across an idea to make koala cupcakes. It is just frosting covered in gray-tinted coconut, mini oreos for the ears, chocolate covered almonds for the nose and chocolate chips for the eyes. SUPER EASY. If I were to do it again, though, I would tint the frosting gray and barely put coconut on, like these: Koala Cupcakes .

Diego Face Cake

Doll Face Cake

This cake was SOOO easy! For my daughter's 1st birthday she was already into dolls, so this was fun. It is just a round cake with colored coconut for the hair and M&M's for the face. The bow in the hair is not edible, but the other kids insisted it needed one! I think they were right!

Purse Cake

For my daughter turning 11 I made a purse which fit the whole activity of her birthday--shopping! It was made with one large circle cake, cut in half, and stood back to back. Decorate as desired! I used a B for her name made from pink M&M's and a new headband for the handle.

Football Jersey

This cake was done for my son who believes that BYU football IS life! So, he wanted a blue cake made into a jersey. Yes, you read that correctly...a BLUE CAKE made into a jersey. So, all the blue you see is the actual cake! It was a fun challenge and he was happy with it! The green on the shoulder was my other son's idea for a grass stain! It is just green sugar sprinkles.

Hi all,

For those of you who don't know me well, I do enjoy making fun cakes. Mostly for my kids birthdays but sometimes for holidays or other occasions. I thought it would be fun to start a blog to have all of those fun cake ideas in one place! Not to claim that I am perfect at this, just really enjoy it! Hope you do, too.
